Information About Hyacinth Bulbs

Commercially prepared hyacinths bulbs allow us to enjoy hyacinths out of season. Hyacinths normally flower in spring, but special treatments, such as early lifting and subjecting them to artificially high and low temperatures, mean that they will flower in early winter. When choosing bulbs, make sure that you but only those that are labelled as having been prepared for forcing and remember that you need to allow about three months between the planting and flowering of a forced hyacinth.

There are several cultivars available for forcing, all of which are derived from the species Orientals. Anne Marie is light rose pink, the pink pearl is a slightly deeper shade of pink, Bismarck is sky blue, Delft blue is more porcelain blue, innocence is white, Jan boss is a carmine red, and the city of Harlem is lemon yellow. All of them are fragrant. Almost all containers can be used for hyacinths, which adapt easily to shallow rooting conditions.

Before you plant the seeds, get all the information that will be helpful. If someone already has them in the garden, ask them how they can be tended. Will the winter sun be good for them? Will they need more water? What happens on days when the sun does not appear? These are the likely questions that should be raised while planting Hyacinths bulbs. When one buys seeds, it gives a better way of nurturing the bloom from scratch, and this is something most garners enjoy. When the seed packets are bought, they need to germinate indoors first. The seedlings need to be tended from the very beginning. They should sprout well so that they are put in the flower beds at the right time. Some seeds need to be put in a larger container once they start to germinate. Watch them grow each day. If the planting instructions are followed, then the flower bloom will be there for all to see.

Plant the bulbs on the top, with just the bottom half of the bulb sitting in the compost and the top half exposed. Arrange them so that the bulbs are not touching either each other or the sides of the container and make sure that they have about half their width between them. Add grit, chippings or moss over the compost to retain moisture, and put the container in a cool, dark place for between eight and ten weeks, until the bulbs have made good root growth.
