How to Grow Tomatoes in the UK

Tomatoes can be tricky to grow in the UK climate, as the are Mediterranean plants that will not necessarily thrive in colder weather conditions. However, you can grow them successfully with a little work and tender loving care. Follow these basic instructions to get your tomato plants off the ground:

1. Choose the type of tomato plant you want. There are two kinds – cordon and bush. Cordon will grow taller and may need stakes.

2. Sow your tomato seeds and keep them indoors at first. Sow the around April time if you plan to move them out of doors. Indoor tomatoes can be sown earlier, or you could buy a young tomato plant and put this outdoors straight away.

3. Use a liquid fertiliser every few weeks to keep the plants healthy. Water them often and evenly, otherwise, cracks will begin to appear in the fruit.

Tomatoes can be rewarding plants to grow. You can be eating your own produce in no time at all.
